Basic & Advanced Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy at Birla Fertility & IVF

Hysteroscopy is a procedure performed to look inside the uterus and correct a few common gynaecological problems. It is performed using a hysteroscope (a long thin, lighted tube that is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and uterus) under local anaesthesia. Hysteroscopy is generally an out-patient procedure that requires no hospitalisation.

At Birla Fertility & IVF, we offer a complete range of basic and advanced hysteroscopy procedures to diagnose and treat issues like polyps, fibroids and uterine adhesions that may be interfering with your ability to become pregnant.

Hysteroscopy Procedures at Birla Fertility & IVF

Our range of hysteroscopy procedures include:

The Hysteroscopy Process

The procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes and is done under local anaesthesia. During the procedure:

Step 1:

You will be asked to lie down, and given local anaesthesia

Step 2:

An instrument (speculum) is inserted into your vagina to keep it open

Step 3:

The vagina and cervix are disinfected and a hysteroscope (long, thin tube with a camera on one end) is passed into your uterus through the cervix

Step 4:

Saline solution is gently pumped into the uterus through the hysteroscope to make it easier for the doctor to see inside the uterus

Step 5:

Pictures of the uterus taken by the camera at the end of the hysteroscope are transmitted on a screen where they are examined to spot any anomalies

In case abnormalities like fibroids or polyps are detected, fine surgical instruments can be passed along the hysteroscope to collect samples and treat the abnormal tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed under local anaesthesia. It can cause some mild discomfort during the procedure, like what you may experience during a pap smear.

Hysteroscopy is a safe procedure. In extremely rare cases, bleeding, infection, intrauterine scarring, or injury to the cervix, uterus, bowel, and bladder can occur.

Hysteroscopy has several benefits such as shorter hospital stays, lesser recovery time and lower post-operative pain. It also helps in diagnosing any anomaly inside the uterus that may be impacting the ability to become pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term.

Laparoscopy is performed under general anesthesia and is used for a detailed inspection of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tube. It is a keyhole procedure where the laparoscope is inserted through a small cut. Hysteroscopy does not require any incisions; however, it is done to look only inside the uterus. Hysteroscopy is often done in tandem with laparoscopy.
